Things to do with the kids

There is plenty to do in the area to keep the kids entertained. Head to any of the safe swimming beaches for a swim, boogie boarding, surfing or sand castle building.  At each end of the beach there are great opportunities to hunt for sea life in around the rocks and to collect small ‘gem’ stones and special seashells.

The estuary provides safe swimming for small children, and eeling fun for the older children. Bring your kayaks and paddle up the river.

Take the kids surf-casting off the rocks at the end of Bluff Road, a 5 min drive or 30 minute walk. For the more adventurous, you can walk or mountain bike Bluff Road all the way to Matarangi.

Or simply take a stroll along the stunning beaches, past the boat ramp, to Kuaotunu Village, lunch at Lukes Kitchen, grab a coffee at Kua Kawhe, or grab a famous Killer Ice Cream from the Village Store.

Walks in and around Kuaotunu include the Waitaia Loop Track and Rings Beach Wetland track. There is also a track that leads up from the village to a lookout point.

Visit beautiful Otama and Opito Bay and hike to the old Opito Bay Pa Site or Crayfish Bay. Visit Whangapoua and walk to Opera Point Pa or the famous New Chums beach.
